Awesome In Austin

The first Formula One race in the United States since 2007 took place on the brand new Circuit Of The Americas track outside Austin, Texas on Sunday. Prior to the race, plenty of pundits opined that some of the turns were too tight or the track was too wide or it was too Circuit Of The Americasslippery or that Pirelli brought the wrong tires for the weekend.

But when the lights went out, Formula One fans were treated to one of the best motor races ever seen on these shores. There was passing throughout the field all race long. And in the end, Lewis Hamilton relentlessly hunted Sebastien Vettel down and forced his way by into the race lead, where he remained.

The drivers and teams were unanimous in their praise of the new Circuit of the Americas facility, which has instantly become one of the world’s great race tracks. The organizers put on a brilliant show for the 130,000 fans on hand and the estimated television audience of over a billion viewers worldwide. Well done!

With Hamilton first, Vettel second and Alonso third in Austin, the battle for the World Driver’s Championship will go down to the last race next Sunday in Brazil. A Formula One fan could not ask for a better or more fitting end to an exciting season.

SuperWeed Key To Energy Independence?

Ethanol is a fuel derived from plants. In the United States, federal regulations require that each gallon of gasoline contain a minimum of 10% ethanol. The vast majority of that ethanol is derived from corn. Because of the federal mandate, the price of corn has risen significantly in the past several years to meet the demand. Increasing the cost of corn increases the cost of the food we eat, since corn is the principal ingredient in feedstocks for cattle, hogs and chickens.

Avundo donax

Avundo donax grows like a weed. Because it IS a weed!

In Brazil, 90% of cars and trucks run on ethanol, which the Brazilians produce from sugar cane, which is abundant in their country. If we had adequate supplies here in the US, we could operate our vehicles on ethanol as well, but sugar cane does not grow as prolifically here.

Now, some biologists claim that we could vastly increase our ethanol supply by using a woody trash plant called Arundo donax, which resembles bamboo in appearance. The plant grows anywhere with little to no cultivation or irrigation. And it produces more yield per acre than any other crop. For more about the plant, read this news story.

Critics of Arundo donax contend that is so aggressive at crowding other plants that it represents a danger to our agricultural system. In fact, three states have banned the plant as being a “noxious weed”.

What do you think? Is Arundo donax America’s answer to energy independence? Or a danger that should be banned? Tell us about it at The Hot Seat Forum in this thread.

Smarter Cars?

The National Transportation Safety Board says collision avoidance systems should be mandated on all new cars. Do you agree? Tell us why or why not on The Hot Seat Forum at this link.

Collision-Avoidance Systems Should Be Mandatory, Says NTSB

Collision Avoidance System On Large Trucki

WASHINGTON — Collision-avoidance systems, such as automatic braking and adaptive cruise control, should be mandatory equipment on all passenger and commercial vehicles, said the National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday.

“Their full life-saving and crash-avoidance potential will not be realized until supported by federal rulemaking and related standards,” said the NTSB in its annual list of “most wanted” changes to government policy. “Lane departure warning, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and electronic stability control have all been proven to aid drivers when they are faced with unexpected conditions, particularly when traveling at highway speeds or when operating larger commercial vehicles that require greater stopping distances,” it said.

Critics argue that such features will add to the vehicle sticker prices. The effectiveness of such systems has been debated as well. A study earlier this year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that lane departure warning systems are a dud among crash-avoidance technologies.

The NTSB said it is pushing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to establish performance standards “where still needed and mandate that these technologies should be included as standard equipment in cars and commercial motor vehicles alike.”

The NTSB investigates the causes of accidents in the U.S., including vehicle and airplane crashes.

A Gaggle Of Gullwings

Gullwings On Parade

Gullwings On Parade

There are only a few cars in history that have become icons – cars that tilted the world of automotive design in new and unexpected ways. The Jaguar XK-E was one. The Corvette Sting Ray was another. And, of course, the silver “James Bond” Aston Martin DB5.

But before any of them came the Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a car that stunned the post-war automotive world. It was unlike anything ever seen before. It was low and sleek. It spoke of power and speed. And money.

Come inside to read more about an event that brought together 37 Gullwing coupes and and 23 of their roadster brethren in Southern California last weekend. Lots of pictures there too!

Formula One At Austin

Next weekend, Formula One racing returns to the US for the first time since 2006. A brand new racing facility has been constructed outside Austin, Texas to host the event for the next 10 years. Herman Tilke has been retained once again to design the course, but this time, the redoubtable Mr. Tilke has included something not seen in his other race track designs – elevation changes!

All the teams come to the event on an equal footing. No one has ever raced on this track before, so there is no data from prior years to help set the cars up properly. Which means, the three practice sessions on Friday and Saturday will be a frenzy of activity, as the teams struggle to understand the new circuit.

Who will get the set-up right and surge to pole position in qualifying? Who will guess wrong and languish at the back of the field? And when the field roars away from the starting line, will there be  collisions between the drivers at Turn One?

Go to the Austin F1 thread at The Hot Seat forum right now and make your predictions for the race weekend. Then join us after the race for the cheers and tears from the members. See you there!

Formula One

Kimi Raikkonen

Sebastien Vettel qualified third for the grand prix of Abu Dhabi, but was moved to the back of the grid by the stewards due to insufficient fuel on board at the end of qualifying. This is a serious tactical blunder by the usually efficient Red Bull Team and allows Fernando Alonso back into the championship battle.
